Rules

Roulette betting options include inside bets and outside bets; the former offer lower chances of winning, but higher payouts, which makes them good for novices or players with less bankroll.

The biggest outside bets on the roulette wheel (red/black, odd/even and column/dozen) cover a large sections of the table, but offer much better odds of winning than the individual numbers. A bet covering all the potential winning 12 numbers (column/dozen) means you effectively have a 1/3 chance of winning. These bets cover much more of the roulette table and so, are less likely to lose: red or black numbers, odd or even numbers, and high/low numbers (the 1-18 and 19-36 bets) all fit into the outside bet category – and when they do win, they are also paid out at higher rates (usually 2:1 when winning an outside bet!). Outside bets also include columns and dozens, respectively covering three groups of numbers on the wheel.

Strategy

The decision which bet to place is left to you, and depends on both your personal bankroll and attitude to risk. Inside bets offer a higher payout with more dramatic excitement, although they tend to yield less often than outside bets.

Outside bets are the red-and-black, odd/even, hig/low odds – also the dozens, which are bets that are a cinch to place, but don’t enjoy an inside payout.

One of the most popular ‘outside bet’ systems is the 2nd and 3rd Dozens Strategy that covers sixteen numbers in the 13 to 36 range by placing chips on the two rows of even dozen with even bet payout when winning and having the third-lowest house edge of all the outside bets, thus proving invaluable for those who want to maximise their chances of winning, if accompanied by calculated risk management.
